[ale] System requirements for broadband?

Ditto Comcast. Not only that - they will only support certain version
of Windows (e.g. no Windows 95). It wasn't a problem for me. I have XP
on my work laptop so used that while the installer was there. When he
left I promptly disconnected it and plugged the cable modem into my
Linksys router then plugged my machines into the router. It works like
a champ.

Since all they really need is the MAC address of the cable modem they
can actually set it up with nothing attached to the modem. They just
want to be sure you don't call them right back so want you to certify
you got on the internet. If you know how to do it with Linux you can
just sign off. However if something doesn't work and all you've got is
some OS they don't support they'll claim it is the OS rather than
troubleshoot their setup.

I don't have any experience with Comcast, but I've set up many a
Bellsouth DSL (including fiber) without having a windows box in the
loop. The down side is you won't get any support from them in your
installation. If that is a down side.
