Ditto.  Almost twenty years ago I worked for a company that made electronic scales.  The tech there never turned his iron off, and he told me to *always* to keep it tinned, just like Jack said.  A neat, simple trick he used to clean it while working was to stick it into a dry cellulose sponge that wiped all of the grime off, then retinned it.
