You probably already know this, but RAM size is IMO
the single biggest factor in perceived performance for
desktop use.  When I buy my next laptop, I'm not settling
for less than 2G of RAM; preferably 4G.

Giving your old machine a RAM infusion (even just bringing
it up to 1G) might make a huge difference.
