I've been hammering intermittently on trying to get MythTV to work for a
few months now.
Mostly, I'm finding the whole thing to be very twitchy as far as just
getting it working goes. I initially tried to get it going on Gentoo
and I got as far as getting composite input to work, but when I moved
the whole thing over to the TV and wired up the output, nothing worked
right anymore. I then installed KnoppMyth, but just when I nearly had
that going, something I did - probably trying to fix something - kept it
from working right ever again, so I went back to the Gentoo route. I
let it sit for about a month and a half while I dealt with other
crises^H^H^H^H^H^Hthings and I only just recently started working on it
again - I'm as far as getting X going with the Nvidia (not nv) driver.
There is Gentoo MythTV info and there's MythTV info, and one kind of has
to pick through both of them together along with the appropriate IRC
channel. Timeliness of documentation is very important; you have to
know, for instance, that you have to jump ahead of Portage to get an
8000-series Nvidia or no joy.
At least I know that my hardware (TV included) functions. One thing
that messed me up was that different devices react in different ways to
having null S-Video input, so, if you're looking at a blank screen when
you think you ought to be seeing something, one must make sure to
power-cycle the TV and perhaps the active switcher box in between it and
the MythTV box.
I also had to do things like buy S-Video cables with rubber-covered
connectors that I could whittle down in order for the connector to fit
into the Nvidia card or the TV.
