[ale] X configuration problem

I wouldn't be ashamed at all.  That would be an easy error after all the years of XF86Config being the config file name.  i will say that I saw that "auto" is the recommended mouse protocol now instead of defining P/S2 or ExplorerP/S2 and so on.  I've used that successfully in my xorg.conf.
