Which kernel and xorg versions?  The device used will be different 
between 2.4 and 2.6 kernels.  It appears from what you have below that 
you're running a 2.4 kernel.  Nothing there slaps me in the face though.

I was trying to locate my old xorg.conf file for my 2.4 kernel, but 
don't seem to have it.  The references to the InputDevices are different 
enough between 2.4 and 2.6, that my current ones would not do you much good.

Have you tried reconfiguring X?
