ok, I ran that command, and every time I do that command, it adds a 
line in /var/log/mail.err:

Feb 20 14:06:11 PaulsPC postfix/postqueue[16167]: fatal: Cannot flush 
mail queue - mail system is down
PaulsPC:/etc/postfix #              

which is weird, because date shows:
# date
Mon Feb 20 09:08:07 EST 2006

and 

pbc at PaulsPC:/var/mail> l /var/spool/mail
total 0
drwxrwxrwt   2 root  root  96 2006-02-20 06:07 ./
drwxr-xr-x  18 root  root 464 2006-02-12 09:10 ../ 
-rwxrwxrwx   1 pbc    109   0 2006-02-20 06:07 pbc* 

var/mail> l pbc
