gah!!!  apt-get install kernel-image-2.6

then change your sources to "unstable" (Sid) and get current (apt-get dist-upgrade).  use --dry-run (apt-get dist-upgrade --dry-run) to see what is going to change.  have only had one minor problem since going to Sid and it was fixed in less than two days.
