[ale] SATA experience

I'm either not compiling in something I need to, or compiling in something I
shouldn't.  Everything seems to work with:
FC4
Debian 3.1
Zenwalk
Knoppix 4.0
Dynebolic
and perhaps a few others.  At the moment I have Debian running on the box,
but I don't like the old packages (a 2.4 kernel even!).
