Dropline is still active enough for me. However, it does a lot of
things I don't like, such as replace a good chunk of the core system
libraries and remove 'obsolete' packages by default. The last time I
got new computer, I tried freerock since it appeared to be much better
behaved.
When I tried it (about 2 months ago) it appeared that FreeRock didn't
have evince (not a big deal) or the evolution-exchange connector (a deal
breaker). I wasn't about to try and compile Evolution. I tried that
back in 2001 and I'm never doing that again.
About the same time I took a look at E17. I found that there were a lot
of good things, but it was too unstable and rough around the edges for
daily use. To bad really, E16 was one of the things that got me
interested in linux in the first place and I'd like to go back at some
point. I guess I'll have to wait a little longer, or learn C to speed
the process up a bit ;)
Which basically meant that after a few days of experiment, I returned to
my old standby of Xfce + applications from dropline-gnome.
