VMWare ESX Server is an all in one distribution/Application based off
RedHat. They have a special filesystem for the VM's that purportedly
handles clustering and speed a lot better than any other filesystem, at
the expense of any directory structure. It has been tuned for certain
hardware and configurations and supports several advanced networking
features that VMWare server ( free version of VMWare GSX server) does
not support.
We currently run 3 VMWare servers for various development uses as that
is the advisable uses for VMWare server according to the EULA and most
of the forums. I have found that is a good system and runs fine on most
Linux distributions with non RPM based Distro's needing a little
tweaking. (Even slackware can run it with the only modification needed
being the creation of the /etc/rc.d/init.d and /etc/rc.d/rc#.d directories)
