You can also use the grub-install script:
Usage: grub-install [OPTION] install_device
INSTALL_DEVICE can be a GRUB device name or a system device filename.
If you're working with /dev/hda, for example:
# grub-install --recheck /dev/hda
Should manage to to the trick for you as far as installing GRUB into the
boot block of the drive.
