[ale] rar file, can anything read it on Linux?

Your more likely to find a conversion program from any format to any 
other format under Linux than any other OS!  Except the BSD's probably 
have the same conversion programs available.  A nice way to go looking 
is using the install utilities for your distro.  I use SUSE so I'll 
sometimes open up Yast2, go into the software installation area, and 
just cruise the explanations of programs.  They are able to be viewed in 
groups based on general purpose so it is easy to see what is available 
for System Utilities.  Another way is to use the man command:

man -k convert

would list the man pages that have the word convert in their header or 
name.  You can pipe that thru sort as well for better readability.

man -k convert | sort

or for fun

man -k convert | sort | wc

yields 339 lines or actual man pages with convert in the header or name 
on my system.

Then, you can always google using the Linux section of Google your 
pertinent terms.  I would use rar and conversion as a start.  Nowadays I 
think you will find that Windows is pretty limited without spending alot 
of money, or downloading binaries that are risky since no source is 
available.  I was thinking thru the cost difference in getting a Windows 
system functional to do the work I need compared to my Linux systems.  
It is really amazing how I would need to spend at least a couple of 
thousand dollars in commercial software to get to the same point of 
functionality as SUSE gets me with a full install.  Anyway there are 
lots of conversion programs for Linux.  Hope this helps,
