No first hand experience, but LaCie has a very good reputation.  I
think they mostly sell into the MAC world, so they should be more
compatible than a Windows only device.

I would worry more if you were going to use a 2.6.x kernel.  I've been
told that the firewire support in 2.6.x is not yet stable.  2.4.x is
supposed to be much better.
