Jim,
    Post the last 10-20 lines of dmesg and the output of lsmod after
connecting your Palm device.  I used the two of those in troubleshooting
my USB-based Palm device.  Although both /dev/ttyUSB0 and /dev/ttyUSB1
showed as being connected, until I specified /dev/ttyUSB1, it did not
work.  Ugly, gross, and unpolished, I know, but it's not critical enough
for me to research further now that it works for me.
    IIRC, there was/is some ugliness with the driver for this
functionality in the 2.6 kernels, and I don't know that it's been
addressed yet.
    I am running Debian Sid on PowerPC with a custom 2.6.10 kernel.
