Yep.

Most laptops use either the vanilla PS/2 mouse type, or the imps2 mouse
type.

Also, a slight possibility:  Check to see if X is using the GPM
repeater, and if it is, make sure that the version of gpm that you are
using isn't something that needs to be upgraded due to some weird
bug/flaw.  I know that Gentoo, even though it's more up to date then
other distributions, isn't typically the latest and greatest everything.

In any case, check both of those avenues out.
