Charles -

Thanks for the stimulus. I went back to man pages, went back to 
ssh-keygen, and back to man pages again. Ultimately it worked when I 
recopied '.ssh/authorized_keys2' as '.ssh/authorized_keys'.

Now I just need to get keys for a couple of other hosts working and I can 
get back to my underlying problem: using public key login for an ssh 
connection to a server/service.
