There may be band-aids out there, but as a whole, most of the problems are
just part of life with VNC. Microsoft RDP and Citrix ICA are just better.
I've yet to find anything that I consider acceptable in the VNC world. It
will do in a pinch, but I try to plan around it. I've gone so far as to
install X on windows and access it via RDP or ICA and then use it to access
the *nix box. I'm working now on publishing a gnome 1.4 desktop (cygnome) as
a windows application from a Citrix server, just to grant myself the same
level of access to my linux systems that I enjoy on my windows systems.
