AbiWord can read stuff that OpenOffice chokes on. Try OpenOffice first.
If it fails, open it in AbiWord and save it again. Then OpenOffice can
handle it just fine.

If AbiWord can't open it, it may be password locked. So far, none of the
FOSS applications I have seen can handle the M$ password lock on a .doc
file. In that case, you need something like CodeWeavers and a copy of M$
Office.
