>From the "glad we found a volunteer" department...
We want to thank ALE member Douglas Bridges for graciously responding
to our recent call for speakers with his offer of an informed presentation on
the topic of Open Source Software and Intellectual Property Issues.
Mr. Bridges is an attorney whose practice focuses on patent, trademark and
copyright litigation. As an associate in the Alston & Bird Intellectual
Property Litigation Group, he is one of the attorneys at the firm which is
representing AutoZone in SCO v. AutoZone.
" In 2003 and 2004, The SCO Group brought the issues of Intellectual Property
and Open Source Software into the forefront of the technology industry with
their lawsuits against Linux developers, vendors, and users. These lawsuits,
however, only scratched the surface of the complex intellectual property
issues that Open Source developers, vendors, and users face. This
presentation will give a brief overview of intellectual property law and a
discussion about the types of IP issues that members of the OSS
community face and what can be done to address these issues. "
The meeting is this Thursday, 2004.10.14, 7:30 pm at the usual
Emory Law School, room 1c location.
(Directions at http://www.ale.org/Central/directions.shtml).
We are also expecting to offer a brief look at a one or two of the Linux GUI
Desktop interface alternatives to the standard GNOME and KDE options as
this months Tip Jar segment.
Hope to see you there!
