[ale] OT : Don't let Cheney hide

Not this again... I thought somebody mentioned Hitler and killed this
stuff..

If I remember correctly, Clinton awarded a no bid contract to Haliburton
during all that Balkans stuff that no one complained about.

If it was wrong of Cheney it was wrong of Clinton.
Dangerous for the pot to call the kettle black.

My guess is that in both cases Haliburton got the contract because they were
the only real option for the job.

Am sure someone on list knows more than I.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>

"As journalist Byron York has reported, it's not really true that the
company got its work without competitive bidding. In the 1990s, the military
looked for ways to get outside help handling the logistics associated with
foreign interventions. It came up with the U.S. Army Logistics Civil
Augmentation Program, or LOGCAP. The program is a multiyear contract for a
corporation to be on call to provide whatever services might be needed
quickly.

Halliburton won a competitive bidding process for LOGCAP in 2001. So it was
natural to turn to it (actually, to its wholly owned subsidiary Kellogg
Brown & Root) for prewar planning about handling oil fires in Iraq. "To
invite other contractors to compete to perform a highly classified
requirement that Kellogg Brown & Root was already under a competitively
awarded contract to perform would have been a wasteful duplication of
effort," the Army Corps of Engineers commander has written."

"As The New York Times has put it, Halliburton's Iraq contract "undermines
the Bush administration's portrayal of the war as a campaign for disarmament
and democracy, not lucre." But to have risked his presidency -- not mention
American lives -- on the war in order to benefit Halliburton, Bush would
have to be a psychopath. That the Halliburton charge has become a chief
Democratic critique of the war is another sign of the party's descent into
unhinged ravings."

"The Clinton administration made the same calculation in its own dealings
with Halliburton. The company had won the LOGCAP in 1992, then lost it in
1997. The Clinton administration nonetheless awarded a no-bid contract to
Halliburton to continue its work in the Balkans supporting the U.S.
peacekeeping mission there because it made little sense to change midstream.
According to Byron York, Al Gore's reinventing-government panel even singled
out Halliburton for praise for its military logistics work.

So, did Clinton and Gore involve the United States in the Balkans to benefit
Halliburton? That charge makes as much sense as the one that Democrats are
hurling at Bush now. Would that they directed more of their outrage at the
people in Iraq who want to sabotage the country's oil infrastructure, rather
than at the U.S. corporation charged with helping repair it."

There's any number of Articles on the subject many of which cite actual
fact.
Don't take my word for it, Google is your friend.

Dick Cheney refuses to give a straight answer about Halliburton.
But we can with this TV ad.

Windows Media | RealPlayer

Contribute Dear Bob,

Last night, Dick Cheney was asked about his connections to Halliburton and
to the awarding of a no-bid, multi-billion dollar contract to his former
company.

Once again, he refused to give a straight answer.

If you missed it, here's the transcript:

Cheney: I can respond, Gwen, but it's going to take more than 30 seconds.

Gwen Ifill: Well, that's all you've got.

Cheney: Well, the reason they keep mentioning Halliburton is because they're
trying to throw up a smokescreen. ... It's an effort that they've made
repeatedly to try to confuse the voters and to raise questions, but there's
no substance to the charges.

Not exactly, Mr. Vice President. Voters want to know more about Halliburton
and you're trying to hide from the facts.

Unlike the Vice President, all Campaign Money Watch needs is 30 seconds to
deliver our message about this Administration and Halliburton. And that's
exactly what we're doing with a new television ad in the critical
battleground state of Wisconsin.

Help us keep this ad on the air.

Our Halliburton ad will tell the facts that Cheney refused to address. This
television advertising cuts through all the negative advertising on the air
because it is different and it presents compelling facts in a memorable way.

Most importantly, it leaves voters asking a question that is
devastating to Bush and Cheney's integrity:

Who are they working for?

The answer is unmistakable: Not us.

If you've been generous with a contribution in the past, we really
appreciate it. Please forward this message on to others or use our
tell-a-friend feature to spread the word.

If you haven't made a recent contribution, or think you can make another
one, we need your immediate help to make sure that the message of this ad
reaches as many voters as possible.

Please make a secure contribution today, and forward this message on to
others.

Thanks,

David Donnelly
