[ale] how long will it take?

It's going to take a while. But rule of thumb is take avg transfer rate 
of ide being used and figure about 75 - 80 % to allow for overhead 
traffic. The process will bring it into memory and the "flush" it back 
out to the destination partition on the drive. Using dd is fine if u r 
rearranging your system and breaking it up into different partitions (ie 
moving your home directories onto a newly created separate 
part/filesystem and then mounting it to the existing home directory on 
the /.) However as was brought up by someone else, you will aslo be 
moving all of the existing file fragmentation, u r probably better off 
using cpio, unless u have veryyy long file names/paths. :-P
