When I look on my own box, I see:
/usr/src/linux-2.4.22/Documentation/video4linux/bttv
Looks like a good place to start. And building your own kernel is good
experience to have. You can't "break" anything permanently. You just have to
rebuild a few times to get it right. Once you have a config that works for
you, you save it. Then your work is done for awhile. I have a standard config
that I have had around for about a year now. I know it gives me everything I
need and eliminates a lot of stuff that I don't need.
