[ale] Do I need a patch cable?

It is good to have a crossover cable on hand of about 6 feet minimum. Just
for those situations where your not sure how capable a NIC or network device
interface is. Plus, you can get them in orange color with snagless ends from
Microcenter so they stand out from your blue, yellow, red, and gray other
regular cables.
