[ale] glibc compatibility problem

Thanks for the explanation! I'll ask however, I found that SuSE 9.0
would not even boot the machine. Disabling hyperthreading and going to
the installer with DMA, ACPI, and so on disabled didn't help either. I
didn't want to even try 8.2 with that motherboard. So, I have had to go
back to RH EWks 3.0. My user, Judy Norris, has completed the install
and gotten the updates going from RHN. However, I still haven't had a
chance to try out the application on it yet. Hopefully it will work
under that distro. I'll check in the AM.

You need only the unlinked object files (*.o) to link with whatever
reasonably compatible libraries are on the current system. This is
what we used to do in the Unix world "in the old days" so that an
application would run on somewhat different versions of a system without
giving clients the source code.

Note too that there is some flexibility in mixing and matching kernels
with the rest of the system. I discovered by accident a few years ago
that a 2.4 kernel will happily power an older version of Slackware that
expected a 2.2 kernel, for example.
