It could be they are scanning for infections. A previous version of
Melissa X infects Macintosh doc files:

The Mac can be infected with the virus, but will display no symptoms.
However any files sent to a PC will infect the PC (imagine my surprise).
I don't see any free detect/remove software for the Mac but it might be
worth a try.
