Could this be related to the weirdness from zip disk stuff. They always
showed up as sda4. 

Check dmesg for details on what the system thinks it is connecting to.
And poke around and see if the full drive is access by another partition
number. Loads of other system use a "strange" partitioning scheme (SGI,
Sun, etc) (Full disk slice is #2 (Sun) #7 (SGI))
