Well, actually, I got a battery-powered lawnmower and weed whacker and
do my own. The savings more than paid for the cost of equipment in the
first year.

We needed some carpet put down. Went with an established company, which
used documented Hispanic laborers. Both spoke English and the company
was bonded, insured and had been in business for more than 25 years.
The point here is that if someone bungles the lawn mowing job, the grass
will grow back. If someone mangles the carpet installation and you had
it done on the cheap, getting satisfaction/restitution may be difficult.

This one is easy. If the work is structural I am going to hire the
masons who are insured and bonded and have a long standing business
address. If I want to build an outdoor barbeque pit, I'll probably
hire Jose -- after looking at samples of his work.
The second point that I think needs to be made is that most of the
time you get what you pay for.
An example:
Last week on a very cold morning my wife went to the corner CVS
to get a prescription filled. Got out of her car and went splat
on the asphalt because some IDIOT have left the sprinkler system on
and that corner of the parking lot was a sheet of ice. My wife went in
to get some help and advise the manager that the sprinkler system
needed to be turned OFF for the winter and that some salt needed to
be spread on the ice rink ASAP. The "manager" on duty was a Hispanic
woman with limited English skills and not a single clue as to what
needed to be done. She'd probably had never dealt with ice in her life.
She didn't offer to patch up my wife's bleeding arm; all she did was
stand there and say in halting English: " I don't know what to do."
My wife pointed out the nearby hardware store and came home.
Obviously CVS is getting all of the quality in a store manager it is
willing to pay for. Which isn't much. We aren't going to call a
lawyer and sue the stupid jerks, but if the same thing had happened
to one of my elderly Jewish neighbors, CVS wouldn't be hearing the
end of this story for a long time.
