[ale] deleting email before downloading (pop3)

Actually, the SIMPLEST simplest way would just be to use telnet. No
special software required.
Connect to your pop server with telnet on port 110, authenticate with USER
username, PASS password, then use the standard POP3 commands to do
whatever you want. LIST will give you a listing of the messages in your
mailbox, RETR # will show you the contents of the message (replace # with
the number of the message) and DELE # will delete it.
