[ale] Palm Wireless suggestions?

Check aircable.net for serial based bluetooth units.  That gives you the 
serial connection over an invisible bluetooth "cable".  All you do is setup 
the serial on both ends.  Is killer on Zaurus and is perfect for bluetooth 
phones since the units have dual sync builtin. (Two device capable sync)  So 
your Zaurus, GPS, and phone are a mini network.  Range is 10 meters max.
