Who owns the device?  Most window managers switch the ownership to the 
current user logged in via the console.  If yours isn't then you could 
chown it to you and try Q3 again.  Sometimes just logging out and 
logging back in fixes sound.  Stupid solution, but Gnome and KDE still 
have plenty of bugs in my opinion.
