[ale] depmod finds unresolved symbols

Good morning,

I'm working on a new kernel at home for a small cluster.
I'm trying out a new distribution which creates a compressed
image and blows it across the network to the other computer,
uncompresses it, and installed it to a Ram disk (very cool!)
Anyway, I'm making a kernel on my main system. I've
built kernels for several years and this this is first time I've
really had a big problem. The other computer gets everything
correctly, but during boot it does a depmod and starts
screaming about Unresolved Symbols in three of the NIC
drivers (8139cp, 8139too, and e100). After that it just hangs
(I assuming since it couldn't load one of the 8139 drivers
which is the built-in NIC I'm using).
Does anybody have any recommendations? I've read the
kernel HOWTO and all it says is that I didn't do a
modules_install correctly (can you screw that up?). Could
this perhaps be a glibc version problem since the glibc that
gets transferred to the other computer is probably different
from the glibc I used to build the kernel?

TIA!

Jeff
