[ale] playing music without alsa or esd

I'd like to start xmms on a box I'm not currently plugged into directly.
in other words, the keyboard/mouse/monitor isn't plugged into it. It's in
my office right beside me, and my speakers are plugged into it, but
keyboard/mouse/monitor are plugged into something else.

I tried just booting it up, ssh -X into it and starting xmms. Course,
xmms couldn't find a suitable driver, which got me thinking. If I recall,
esd is started when Gnome is fired up, and alsa when KDE is started.
However, since I'm not directly connected to the machine, I'm not logging
into gdm and neither of these is started up.

Is there a way to start esd or alsa easily without actually logging in?
As I say, the speakers are right here in front of me, so actually remote
audio *shouldn't be required* (although if this is indeed possible I'd be
really interested in that as well). I just want to be able to tell xmms
to start playing without a Gnome or KDE session going...

Thanks for the help...

John
