I don't see the difficulty in defining or addressing dependencies in a 
shell script. See my subsequent post with examples. I don't really see 
that it is easy to define dependencies in make.  It handles them well, 
but it's not particularly easy.  The more complex the dependencies, the 
more complex the make file.

Personal opinion of course...
