 >>>Has anyone attempted to run Solaris 9 on x86?

- Yes, and here are some lessons learned:

- Make sure you have a network card that is natively supported. I think
most Intel cards are. Check out the x86 hardware compatibility list
(http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/) for your card.

- Download the lastest and greatest rev of Solaris - I think they are at
Sol9 update 3 - and patch the system with the laster jumbo patch set.

>>>My biggest concern would be with video support.

-I had issues here in the past, but for my latest install it wasn't an
issue. again, start off at the HCL looking for your video card. During
the install choose the vesa generic driver and go from there.

>>>Did they remove CDE?

- No. CDE is still the default desktop. But you can download Gnome for x86 from www.sun.com/download. I have heard you can compile enlightenment or fluxbox as well.

Sounds like you are trying to create a machine for the desktop? No?
