Also, I went ahead and got the duplex option on the printer and it is
really nice to have for saving on paper cost. SUSE 8.2 just supported
the HPs on install by setting up CUPS queues for every type of possible
print the printer could make. It was fantastic to see a grayscale high
quality queue as well as a low quality queue and so on. I am using RH9
and it is using CUPS to interface with the lab printers. My SGI CUPS
server is a bit limited since it is running an old CUPS and has only a
few basic PPDs, but it still cranks out the jobs to the printers.
Epson is completely supported by CUPS with extremely high quality
printer drivers thru the GIMP printing project. However, the printheads
are builtin to the printer which means if you let the ink dry out in the
head by not printing regularly, the printer is worthless.
HP has separate print heads from the printer carriages so you have to
buy new ones every once in a while, but you'll never ruin the printer by
not printing for a couple of months.
