All good points. One shouldn't point out the problems with the
existing systems; rather, one should play up the advantages of
changing them. (While, of course, making the associated costs clear as
well.)
When building products for Evil Empire platforms, I try to use OSS
tools, and make my code portable to OSS platforms wherever
possible. This takes very little effort in most cases, especially when
using higher-level languages like Python and Java; and when, in a
couple of years, our clients say, "We've heard we can save a bunch of
money by using Linux; what's up with that?", I can say, "You damn sure
can, and the costs of converting your existing systems will probably
be less than the cost of your next Windows upgrade."
