FWIW, AT&T Worldnet requires SSL to retrieve your email messages via
pop3. I haven't really investigated what scheme they use, I just tell
fetchmail to use SSL and it just works.
Even though I haven't used dialup in years (cable modem), I still shell
out the $14.95 a month for my Worldnet account for this reason (among
others).

Actually, I'd be willing to bet it's more than just the newcomers. Time
and again, people who "should have known better" do things like this.
