You have to judge software based on it's track record. I use Nvidia
drivers which are closed source because they work well for my needs. I
use Mozilla for web and mail since I am used to it and the security bugs
are fixed quickly and are few and far between. One is closed source and
the other isn't. But, the track record shows that my choices aren't bad
from a security standpoint. Sticklers for open source may not want to
take advantage of closed source packages. It really is a matter of
choice, which I think is a healthy thing to have available.
