[ale] multiple icons & gmc on kde

I have mandrake 8.0 and kde.  It suddently started loading "gmc"with the X icon  8 times resulting in my dekstop icons being very strange (text associated with the icons are highlighted with white).  Killing the gmc 8 times on the task bar results in a proper desktop.  There is nothing in autostart.  Like a phoenix it keeps coming back when I log in.  

What is going on?
