I think an important detail here is this is an ETHERNET splitter, not just a
RJ45 splitter.

I had no idea it was that simple (relatively).  I wonder if it works at
100MBit..

A while back I was looking for a way to take one RJ45 network port and
make 2 out of it.  RadioShack has a device that does it for $20.  Below
is the schematics for the device.  Right now purchasing is far cheaper
than building.
