Turns out this problem came from not setting my ulimit to unlimited.
Once I did that, Q3 ran like a charm.  Just had to ensure that +set
r_gldriver pointed to the nvidia GL libs too.  

Next is brightening the display.  In Q3, the brightness adjustment in
Settings, Graphics, Brightness is greyed out: can't use it.  So I'm
experimenting with /r_fullbrightness and /r_gamma N.N and /vid_reset in
the Q3 console.  It's getting better at least!
