Whoa! That sounds frighteningly scary/familiar.  About the same time....Slackware w/0.99 kernel (floppy distro) on a Northgate 385/25+FPU, 8M, 2x 65M RLL drives and the very same ATI VGA "Wonder" XL.  I still have the mobo mounted on the wall back in my house in Atlanta.
