As Keith noted, LVM only does striping, but isn't fault tolerant. It
*does* offer one thing more, though: snapshots. It's kinda crufty, and
sometimes doesn't work properly with the fs (some, like XFS have a
free/thaw API that's useful in this case).
The idea is: take a snapshot, which is an fs "frozen in time". Mount
that read-only, and take a backup of it. Then discard the snapshot.
There ya go, a backup without files changing underneath, and the regular
folks can continue to work (or at least surf).
