[ale] X hangs at start

SWAG: did any of this involve a change from old-style /dev/ptyXX ptys
to the new Unix98 /dev/pts/XX scheme? I don't know if/why that
would break the tty command, but that's the first thing that
popped into my tiny little brain when I read your message.
