Sorry, that wasn't at all what I meant to say. You are right, Debian
does supoort a wide variety of hardware. What I meant to say was, all
*intel* packages are build for the i386, ie, no i686-optimized packages.

There are at least 2 curses-based gui frontends for apt, a gnome
frontend, and I believe there is a KDE frontend. Personally, whenever I
need to install a package that I don't know the name of, I just hop over
to http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages , do a quick search, and
apt-get install it. I find this faster than firing up a gui, but of
course most people would probably prefer the gui approach.
