Be careful assuming your Dell purchase will work properly. Best bet is
to check the linux laptop pages from a Google search on the model you
wish to buy and see how successful you will be. The Dell Inspiron 8500
is a great laptop for hardware but too new to really be fully
supported. Since ACPI is the Dell standard for power control now the
usual APM based stuff doesn't work until a DSDT is created for that
motherboard chip combo. I would be cautious until you can prove it will
work.
Emperor Linux is a great company local to Atlanta that sells nice
laptops and preconfigures the kernels for the best support of the
hardware available at the time. You should definitely check them out.
I've used them to retrofit the I8500 we bought from Dell and that has
worked out well in the end. The essential stuff works and works well.
There support has turned out to be pretty good too. I thought at first
I was ignored but I got great support fixing some problems in the end.
