[ale] ping won't pong.........

Even though I can surf the web and when I attempt to ping, e.g. 
www.apple.com....the dot quad address appears on screen, the repetitive 
scrolling pong response does NOT appear on screen, though I can see the 
modem lights blinking.

What's wrong ?
