[ale] Again with the filesystem recovery (semi-OT)

I saw on the SuSE 8.1 software listing while selecting packages 
something called trashcan or something along those lines.  It was a 
utility that was to be between you and the "rm" command and  somehow was 
to integrate, I think, into your desktop or shell environment so all 
deletions were really going to the trash can until you emptied that.  I 
didn't install it because of how much I enjoy using the rm command, 
however, it looked interesting.  The docs I've read on ext3 explained 
that it should be remounted as ext2 when running ext2 recovery 
utilities  but normally the journaling info can be ignored while in this 
state.  The remount back to ext3 gives you back the journalling and you 
can continue on as before.  So don't just remount as ext2 permanently.  
Just do it when or if you need to deal with file recovery or state problems.

Under XFS on IRIX, if you dd the drive before the fsr routine runs 
(which is weekly) or any writes occur you might get your data back.  I 
am using the XFS under Linux combined with LVM on my home SuSE 8.1 box.  
So far no problems or burps.  Unfortunately, XLV from XFS wasn't 
Opensourced and SGI sells that separately from XFS.  But, LVM seems to 
work alright for me.  Let's hope I don't have to try a recovery on that 
combo!!!  Actually, the original XFS is extremely robust.  I get the 
feeling from the docs I've read that the speed of XFS or "smartness" of 
Open Source XFS may not equal the original but that the robustness 
should be there.  Of course, that is my take from light editorials, not 
real examination of any testing done on the system.
