The svideo port on many modern video cards allows you to play games,
dvds and the like on your tv.  These ports generally aren't used to do
web surfing (though you can with big fonts), word processing and the
like.  The output quality of my GF2 is quite good on my sony 27".  I run
it at 800x600 32 bit depth.  Without a monitor connected to my video
cards defaults to the svideo port if there is a tv connected (75ohm)
load.

As far as mythtv goes, it uses the capture card to capture the video
stream and record it, compressed in a juiced up mjpeg format, to the
hard drive where it can later be played.  Even for live tv it's first
recorded to disk before playback.  This gives you the ability to pause
live tv, rewind, and fastforward if you are behind.

Mythtv runs fullscreen, there are no windows or toolbars etc.  it takes
over the screen, even if you run it on a regular computer monitor.
